Hyundai Motor Company has launched the all-new 2022 Hyundai Tucson. The all-new Tucson is an important launch for Hyundai as the model is among its most popular, racking up global sales of more than 7 million units since its original launch in 2004.
Tucson’s new exterior styling expresses Hyundai’s evolving Sensuous Sportiness design identity. The new SUV embodies what Hyundai designers call ‘parametric dynamics’ with kinetic jewel surface details that make the new Tucson look futuristic. The front grille receives a triangular texture that’s mirrored right to left, taking some clear inspiration from the Elantra and Sonata. Tucson’s integration of technology and design is most evident in its innovative half-mirror type daytime running lamps (DRLs) that are assimilated seamlessly within the parametric grille, only revealed when illuminated.
The sides of the new Tucson gets irregular rhombus and triangle shapes with bulging front and rear fenders and a long, jagged character line that juts out above the inset lower doors. There angular wheel arches and rocker panel appear in crossover-chic black plastic, all notches, and creases. The long and relatively flat roof gets done up in contrasting black, with an arching piece of chrome trim making the Tucson look lower and more rakish than it actually is.
The kinetic design theme carries over to the rear where the full-width taillamp incorporates half-hidden triangular shapes that are only visible when lit, echoing the DRL on the front. The Hyundai logo moved up and is integrated into the glass while the wiper also moves up and hides under the rear spoiler. Lower rear bumper trim gets a unique diamond texture that’s seemingly hidden behind a faux rear skid plate.
The inside of the new Tucson also receives a complete overhaul albeit taking a slightly less aggressive route. The front passenger compartment is divided into two clear cockpits, with a hoodless digital cluster directly in front of the driver. The broad ridge of the dashboard blends consistently with the doors, wrapping around front occupants like a deep gorge. The center stack of the dashboard is made up of two vertically stacked screens that measure 10.25 inches each. You also get a push-button drive selector like on the Ioniq and the Kona EV that alleviates a lot of room for storage.
Addressing the need of current times, the new Tucson also gets an air quality monitoring system that keeps track of exterior pollution levels using a fine-dust sensor. It also tracks interior air quality and purifies the cabin as needed, while a lower-moisture evaporator helps keep the HVAC internals odor-free. Tucson’s second-row seats will feature fold-and-dive functionality for optimized reconfiguration capability between passengers and cargo. Its cargo volume will provide an exceptional 1095 liters of usable space.
With the new Tucson, you also get Hyundai’s Digital Key is an app that turns the customer’s smartphone into a smart key. It uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to detect authorized users, so they can operate their vehicle without a physical key present. Customers can lock and unlock their vehicle, activate the panic alert, and start the engine and its climate control system from up to 90 feet away.
Powering the all-new Tucson is a 2.5-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that makes 190 bhp and 247 Nm of torque. The Tucson will also get a Hybrid and a plug-in hybrid model which will be powered by a 1.6-liter engine, with total system power coming in at 230 hp and 350 Nm. You also get an all-wheel-drive system that features Eco, Comfort, Smart, Sport, Mud, Sand, and Snow driving modes. Hyundai applied its first-in-class E-Handling technology for HEV and PHEV models to help improve steering response and directional stability when cornering or in adverse driving conditions. Tucson drivers get further assistance from Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel-drive system that provides sure footing on various road surfaces and conditions.
Tucson offers more safety features than ever. The Hyundai SmartSense safety feature suite includes: Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Blind-Spot View Monitor, Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW), Surround View Monitor, Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (RPCA), Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA), High Beam Assist (HBA), and Driver Attention Warning (DAW). The all-new Tucson is available with advanced technology features including Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) Advanced Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop and Go and Safe Exit Warning (SEW).
The all-new Tucson goes on sale in Korea in September as a 2021 model. It will go on sale in the U.S. and other global markets as a 2022 model starting from the first half of 2021.
